Quick update on the progress of this tile. With the base complete I have moved onto the building itself. So far I am just dry brushing it to get it to a state fit for the tabletop. There is a daunting amount of skulls and extra detail to be painted, so I'll get to those parts later.

Painting Techniques

I have managed to finish this terrain base that I demonstrated how to build up earlier on. This tile will work well as a stand alone piece and as a base for my Basilica Administratum to stand on.

I used the same painting techniques as my earlier test tile and you can see the exact paints, materials and steps I executed in that post. However, to summarise, you begin with dry brushing, then pick out the details and finally finish with washes and weathering powder.

Tutorial: Ruined Urban Battlefield Terrain Tile

Starting Materials and Requirements

This tile has been a test for a complete set of tiles I want to use for an entire ruined battlefield. The goal was for something modular, light weight, compact and low cost. Cork tiles seem to fulfil all of these criteria. It is weaker than a typical wood base but it is sturdy enough. The tiles I have bought are 1ft by 1ft so more dramatic terrain tiles with large built in structures will not be possible. There is still a wealth of options at this scale and I find it very convenient when I have in mind transporting between a different places.

The Games Workshop plastic fortification and terrain sets are just fantastic. They are chunky, modular and covered in delicious grim dark detail. I have looked at many companies making terrain and I not yet found better.  I am absolutely open to being proved wrong so if you have encountered someone out there making brilliant kits please do get in touch! As you will see I have a desire for large amounts of terrain in the near future....
