Ancient Warriors of Fenris
Last weeks flyer may have been somewhat divisive in it's appearance but this time we have an incredible box with parts to please everyone. There are several unique quirks we are seeing for the first time with this box. A dreadnought with a bare head, a shield or the new frost cannon. Then there is the ginormous axe. Good thing is, if any of these things aren't to your taste you can simple mix and match. Personally I am a big fan of Murderfangs 'murderclaws' as ridiculous as that sounds. His head is a bit silly though.
Take a look at the full images below:
The Rules
Murderfang
Points Cost: 135 WS5 BS3 S6 [F12 S12 R10] I4 A4 HP3
Special Rules
Furious Charge
It Will Not Die
Rage
Rampage
Murderlust: Ignore crew stunned, crew shaken.
Relics of the Fang Murderclaws: S7 AP2 Master-crafted, Shred, Specialist Weapon
Venerable Dreadnought
Looks like it has an option for the new helfrost cannon and also a variant with an axe and shield. The shield is likely 3++. Sounds like a beast.
In case you missed the rules for the new freeze ray weapons here is a summary:
Helfrost Cannon
dispersed - R24" S6 AP3 Heavy 1, Helfrost, Blast
focussed - R24" S8 AP1 Heavy 1, Helfrost
Helfrost Destructor
dispersed - R24" S6 AP3 Heavy 1, Helfrost, Large Blast
focussed - R24" S8 AP1 Heavy 1, Helfrost, Lance
Helfrost - If a model suffers one or more unsaved wounds from this weapon, it must pass a separate Strength test for each wound suffered or be removed from play.
Conclusion - Design & Rules
On the design: Incredible amount of options for one box, similar to the recent chaos dread release a few months back. All options are crammed with detail including some never before seen variants on the classic space marine walker.
On the rules: Both Murderfang and the sword and board venerable look like beasts in close combat. They are still very open to the normal weakness that CC dreads have struggled with... getting there in the first place. They are just too slow and can be easily out manoeuvred and picked off. The 3++ will make a big difference so we will have to wait to see if it's enough to be competitive. Murderfang is also quite well costed, boasting a pile of special rules for not too high a price.
What do you think? Are they competitive?
I think I will try the Murderfang/Drop-pod option, it's very "Space Wolf" style, Also Bjorn would be a great option, it depends on the rules.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the photographs, they're amazing!
You'll have to drop him in with a few other support units I reckon. He is going to be a bullet magnet!
DeleteIt appears, though not 100% confirmed, that the shield will only be protecting the front arc. Though still powerful, makes the board/shield dread a lot less threatening. I generally take ironclads, and they primarily just get taken out by rear shots from skimmers.
ReplyDeleteWhat is really exciting me, is the thought that there will be a dread formation. I so, I will probably take the formation for my templars, and run them as sword and board dreads. (or use murderdreads for deff dreads for orks)
