Custom Warhammer 40k Scenario - Further Evolution

Thoughts on the Missions Played so far

I am very much enjoying trying out new victory conditions that change the way you play and change the way you build your lists. The last two games have been close and were full of interesting choices and decision points that could have sent the game either way. I do have another battle report to write up from last weekends Space Wolf against Tau Empire clash but I am not sure I will get time this week.

Tau Empire 2000 point Army List - Capture the Paint Pot

Capture the Paint pot

So without a proper name for our custom scenario it'll be referred to as 'Capture the Paint Pot' for the moment since that is what I am using as objective markers. They are actually pretty good for the task. I may have to actually paint my paint pots so they blend in a bit better....

Anyway the rules follow the normal Warhammer 40k FOC however troops are not scoring by default now. Instead you need to by a 20pt wargear upgrade on an infantry unit to allow them to cap. This has presented me with many interesting choices. What's clear is that several resilient scoring units will be required. You can't rely on protecting them by keeping them in reserves either since objectives score on a per turn bases. No, the units must be on the board from turn one and need to survive reliably until turn 4.
Warhammer 40k Custom Scenario - The Weekends Victory Conditions

Creating Interesting Objectives

After the success of last weeks scenario I am keen to expand upon the victory conditions we used. The battle was dramatic and the objective system really enhanced the gameplay in my view. In case you didn't see, our objectives are lined up down the centre of the map and are worth 1 victory point per turn. They activate at the start of turn 2 and deactivate at the end of turn 4. Makes list building very interesting, especially for Tau who traditionally like to sit back in a line and shoot from afar.

The Setting

You can find my army list and the Victory conditions for this encounter in this blog post. The battle is set over a ruined imperial complex, the husks of burnt out tanks from some long forgotten battle still remain. There are however, important data nodes in the centre with unknown tactical details (paint pots) to whoever can get their hands on them. Farsight Enclave and Space Wolf task forces have been dispatched to secure the data.

The Battle Scenario and Logic (or lack of) Behind the List

The scenario uses the following victory conditions:

4 Objectives placed down the center of the map. They become active on turn 2 and deactivate on turn 5. The games ends on turn 5.

Once objectives are activated they become one VP per turn captured differing from the standard BRB objectives where points are only captured on the last turn of the game. Secondary objectives were Line Breaker and Slay the Warlord.
