Spirits of the Wild
I don't know much about wood elves, I have never really had the desire to collect an army of them (apart from a brief moment when watching the latest hobbit movie!) but I just wanted to highlight a few of the latest picture leaks and rumours of the new models coming out for that range.
I have seen mixed views and opinions so I wanted to throw mine out there that comes down firmly on the positive side of the fence. I was never a fan of the old humanoid tree look and these new spirit like models with their fantastic mixes of colours, shapes and poses are just a wonderful interpretation of a classic look in my view. As a big fan of games like Zelda and films from Studio Ghibli films such as Princess Mononoke, Games Workshops take on this really appeals to me.
Take a look at these new models and let me know what you think. I'd like to know if I'm in the minority or not on this!
I've never been a huge fan of WE, but when I first saw this image a couple of days ago I was just awestruck. It's definitely an amazing, and very aesthetically pleasing model.
ReplyDeleteSaying that, though, it's also a very "safe" design. It's not like the Centurions or Taurox or the new WHFB plastic warmachines that have their unique GW quirks that people love or hate. It's just a generic, badass treeman with good proportions laden with details.
I imagine the only folks who would dislike this model are those who prefer more simplistic models with less detail, which is hard to do with tree bark and wood grain. I'm not a fan of Chaotic faces, glowing eyes, jagged mouths, harlequin type masks, etc, but even I admit that it just works on a model like this.
The previous/current WE line, while old, is also fantastic and was also amazing when they first came out so long ago.
Do you think it's safe though? I think it would have been easier to go for a more traditional massive Lord of the Rings style Ent - more realistic bark as apposed to a myriad of colours and etched details which is what I associate with generic treeman.
DeleteI take your point about the Taurox and Centurion designs, they were certainly more divisive of peoples opinions and perhaps this won't be so extreme. I look forward to seeing the 360 views on the Games Workshop website.
